Is glass liquid, solid or something else? Explain.
Solution:
According to the scientific definition of solid and liquid, the glass is neither solid nor liquid, because it doesn’t fulfill all the characteristics of solids or liquids as described in Problem 2.
The glass melts in a range of temperature (1400-1600oC) instead of a precise melting point. The particles in glass are not well organized in a regular pattern, they are rather disorganized as in liquids, but can’t flow as in a liquid. This kind of material, intermediate between solid and liquid, is called “amorphous solid”.
(N.B: Examples of other amorphous solids are plastic, rubber and gel)
